Summary of "Part 1: Introduction to the vMotion process"

Introduction to VMware vMotion

This video provides an in-depth introduction to the VMware vMotion process, explaining its purpose, prerequisites, and the detailed technical workflow involved in live migrating virtual machines (VMs) between ESXi hosts without downtime.

Key Technological Concepts and Features

Detailed vMotion Process Workflow

  1. Initiation and Compatibility Check When a vMotion is initiated, vCenter Server starts a long-running task that first performs a compatibility check. This ensures the VM and destination ESXi host are compatible in terms of versions and hardware.

  2. Migration Specification Creation A migration spec is generated containing detailed VM configuration, hardware details, VM options, and network information related to the vMotion network.

  3. Communication Between Components

    • VPXD (vCenter daemon): Connects to both source and destination ESXi hosts.
    • VPXA (agent on ESXi hosts): Facilitates communication between VPXD and the ESXi hosts.
    • hostd (host daemon): Manages host-level information and VM state.
    • vmx process: Manages non-critical I/O for the VM.
    • vmm process (Virtual Machine Monitor): Handles critical I/O related to CPU, memory, and other key resources.
  4. VM State Management The vmx and vmm processes set the VM to an intermediate state during migration to prevent configuration changes mid-process.

  5. Kernel Module Interaction Kernel modules on both source and destination hosts coordinate via sockets opened on the vMotion network, enabling the transfer of VM state and memory.

  6. Destination Host Role On the destination, VPXA and hostd coordinate similarly, but the vmm process is not involved since the VM’s active memory remains on the source until migration completes.
