Overflow of the Spirit — Session 2: The Foundation — Intimacy with God
Presenter Mark Virkler teaches a practical, daily method for establishing intimacy with the Holy Spirit so you can “hear His voice” and overflow in faith, vision, and spiritual gifts. The core method is distilled into four keys (from Habakkuk 2:1–2) and a supporting set of checks, practices, and tools.
Wallet-card summary: “Quiet → Fix eyes on Jesus → Tune to spontaneity → Write.”
Four keys (actionable practice)
-
Quiet yourself in God’s presence Build a short daily practice of stillness/soaking (prayer closet, quiet room). Overcome fear of stillness and choose trust in the Holy Spirit.
-
Keep watch to see Use the “eyes of your heart”: intentionally imagine Scripture scenes and place yourself in them (godly imagination/visualization).
-
Tune to flow Invite the Holy Spirit to “take the scene over.” Expect spontaneous flowing thoughts, pictures and impressions; allow them to become dialogue and vision rather than analyzing while receiving.
-
Record the vision Journal what flows without immediately testing it. Writing lets you stay in faith and receive longer uninterrupted flow; test/verify later.
Practical daily routine (condensed)
- Quiet for a few minutes; picture Jesus near you (childlike, smiling), relax and smile.
- Ask a simple question: “Lord, what do you want to say to me?”
- Tune to the flow of spontaneous thoughts/images for 5–15 minutes and write them down.
- Later compare, test and share with trusted advisors.
Five tests to verify origin and safety of impressions
- Origin style: analytical (self) vs. spontaneous flow (spirit). Spontaneous flow suggests spiritual origin.
- Scripture alignment: does the message line up with biblical principle?
- Character-check: does it reflect the character and names of Jesus (comforter, teacher, edifier) rather than the accuser/condemner profile?
- Fruit test: when acted upon, does it produce good fruit (peace, healing, constructive change) or harm?
- Two/three witnesses: share with 2–3 trusted spiritual advisors (beginning with spouse) and ask if their hearts bear witness to it.
Common lies/sabotages to renounce
- “God isn’t speaking today” (dispensationalism/demythologizing).
- “You must earn hearing God by superior righteousness, fasting, or works.”
- “It’s too simple to be real” (doubt that spontaneous flow could be God).
- Fear that stillness opens you to demons or that your sins disqualify you from relationship.
Mark exhorts rejecting these lies and embracing childlike faith.
Practical journaling exercise (two-way journaling)
- Two short paragraphs, each about four minutes: 1) You write one reason you love Jesus for four minutes. 2) Then tune and receive/write for four minutes as Jesus speaks back about how/why He loves you.
- Afterwards share what God spoke (especially major/uncertain items) with a trusted person; read God’s exact words rather than paraphrasing.
Benefits and outcomes emphasized
- Greater daily faith, joy, peace, vision and alignment with Scripture.
- Access to the Spirit’s manifestations (words of wisdom/knowledge, prophecy, tongues, healings) when you yield your faculties to the “river” within.
- Journaling helps sustain faith, build conviction, and produce lasting transformation.
