Summary of "RuneScape’s First Glitch Haunted Jagex For Years"
RuneScape Classic’s early “super strength” glitches and their fallout
Overview
From roughly three weeks after launch and for the next ~3 years, players repeatedly discovered ways to temporarily boost Strength to absurd levels in RuneScape Classic. Jagex patched each method, but players kept finding new ones. These glitches shaped early PvP, the in-game economy, and moderation practices in Classic.
Key glitches, how they worked, and consequences
1) Beer stacking (first glitch, ~3 weeks after launch)
- What happened: Drinking beer temporarily increased Strength. The effect originally stacked per beer (about +1 Strength per beer), so a full inventory could grant as much as +30 Strength.
- Gameplay impact: Made cheap, risky PvP extremely dangerous. Banks only held coins and PvP was widespread outside Lumbridge, so temporarily boosted attackers could kill players quickly.
- After patch: Andrew Gower changed beer so it only ever gives a very small boost (one or sometimes two levels via a quirk in the formula). Beer was also changed to slightly drain Attack (reducing accuracy).
- Outcome: Early “alcoholic” PvP was common until the change.
2) Spinach roll (shortly after)
- Source: A rare item associated with Wizard Treyborn from the Demon Slayer quest; later added to moss giant drops (1/128).
- What happened: Eating a spinach roll gave +5 Strength temporarily and the effect stacked. Multiple rolls in an inventory could produce very large temporary Strength claims (reports of +50 or even +150).
- Availability & debate: Initially nearly unobtainable (dialogue-only gift); later more available from moss giant drops. Some Classic community members doubt whether stacking truly worked in practice.
- Removal: The Strength-boosting effect was quietly removed (likely before the Herblaw/Herblore potions launch). Scammers nevertheless continued to profit by lying about the roll’s rarity or power.
3) Knife-equip bug (January 2002)
How it worked (contemporaneous description):
- Carry a weapon and one or more knives in your inventory.
- Click the minimap to walk somewhere far away, then right-click your weapon and choose Drop.
- While your character was still moving (items only dropped once you stopped), right-click the weapon again and use the Equip option that remained in the menu.
- Equip a knife (knives originally had hidden equip bonuses that were never removed).
- Repeat with many knives to stack hidden Strength/accuracy bonuses (players reported equipping dozens).
- Gameplay impact: Could produce absurd attack/melee numbers; because of a 3-round combat lock attackers could kill you before you could run. Popular knife spawn areas became crowded.
- Consequences: Heavy abusers (pking) were permanently banned; trainers received temporary bans. If you logged in after the patch with knives still equipped you could be instantly killed and your character marked “known cheater.”
4) God-spell bug (short-lived, just before RuneScape 2)
- What happened: Flames of Zamorak (a god spell) could one-shot players in the Wilderness for some users due to an untested interaction (theorized to involve Ranged level affecting spell damage).
- Outcome: Rapidly patched. This was the last major Classic super-strength exploit before RuneScape 2 beta ended most major Classic updates.
Other notable context and gameplay points
- Classic limitations magnified exploits:
- Banks held only coins (no item protection), PvP was ubiquitous, and item/security systems were fragile — temporary stat boosts could be decisive.
- Terminology: Early skill name “herb law” (later standardized to “Herblore” / Herb lore).
- Community effects: Forums and guides (e.g., Tippet forums) and prominent posters (e.g., Xmagna X) helped spread exploit techniques and rumors. Some effects remain debated among Classic players.
Warning: All the above were bugs/exploits and led to bans or account penalties. Many were patched quickly. These accounts are historical descriptions, not recommendations or tactics.
