Geumjeong-gu’s Innovative Small Library Project
The video reports on Geumjeong-gu, a district in Busan, recognized for its innovative small library project aimed at enhancing residents’ daily lives. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected this initiative as a national best practice.
Since Mayor Jeong Mi-young took office, about 10 national small libraries have been established within three years. Currently, there are a total of 38 public and private small libraries operating across the district.
Role of Small Libraries
These small libraries go beyond traditional book lending by serving as community hubs that foster communication and connection among residents. They host:
- Discussion groups
- Learning clubs
- Parenting information sessions
- Small concerts
This approach effectively transforms libraries into vibrant social spaces.
Accessibility and Services
Accessibility has greatly improved, with many libraries located within a 10-minute walk of each other. Additionally, a book delivery service is available, especially benefiting seniors aged 65 and older through the pioneering Senior Book service. This service allows seniors to request books online for home delivery, addressing concerns heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Geumjeong-gu plans to expand its library network further. New projects include:
- Geumjeong Aikum Jaram Small Library focused on children
- The first small library inside Guseo Subway Station
- Additional family- and youth-friendly libraries near Pusan National University and Spo One
Mayor Jeong encourages public and private sector support and frequent use of these libraries to foster community ownership.
