Summary

Jack lives with his poor mother in a tiny countryside cottage, with only an old cow to rely on. When the cow can’t provide milk anymore, Jack is sent to sell it at the market—but instead of walking the whole way, he takes a shortcut through the forest. There, an old traveler tricks/intercepts him by offering “five magic beans” for the cow.

Jack brings the beans home, but his mother is furious. She throws the beans out the window and sends Jack to bed.

The next morning, a giant beanstalk has grown from the cottage, reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs it to a fluffy-cloud road that leads to a massive stone castle inhabited by giants. A tall giant woman feeds him (eggs, sausage, toast) but warns him to hide because her husband is coming.

The giant arrives grumpy and threatening, with a recurring joke where he claims he smells “the blood of an Englishman.” The wife insists it’s just the food she cooked. Then the husband orders magical items from her—first a hen that lays solid-gold eggs. Jack learns the hen can talk, and that it’s forced to lay golden eggs every day. The husband then demands a golden harp, which plays and sings by itself—again, forced nightly to soothe the giant. The harp also talks and begs to be rescued.

Jack escapes with the harp, but when the harp stops playing, the giant wakes up, roars in anger, and chases him. In the final showdown, Jack cuts down the beanstalk with an ax, trapping the giant when it falls. Jack returns to a peaceful life with both rescued magical helpers (the hen and the harp). People come from miles away to enjoy the harp’s music, and the story ends with Jack and his mother never going hungry again.
