Protest by Kerala Contractors Over Migrant Workers’ Wage Demands

Private building contractors across districts in Kerala staged a protest against what they described as an unfair wage hike demanded by migrant workers from other states. Protesters claimed the construction sector is facing an “unprecedented” crisis because workers have returned after elections and festivals (including Assam and Bengal) and are now pressing for significantly higher wages.

Wage Demands and Claimed Increases

The subtitles cited sharp wage rises, including:

• Mason wages: from 1000 to 1800
• Helpers’ wages: from 850 to 1500

Contractors argued that these increases—amounting to roughly an additional Rs. 500 per day compared with earlier levels—are financially unsustainable. They added that even small contractors depend on about 15 workers, so the extra daily cost becomes a major expense, estimated at “two to three lakh rupees per month.” This, they said, is pushing many of them into hardship.
