Summary

Donna recounts becoming gravely ill with rheumatic fever at age four. While hospitalized, she says she entered a bright, white, fog-like realm and met a kind woman who told her that life is like a dream and death is waking up. Donna says she repeatedly returned to this place during her illness, but came back after hearing her mother call for her.

Over time, Donna came to understand the woman as a higher, or “superconscious,” version of herself, connected to a larger Source shared by all beings. She describes later out-of-body and unusual experiences, including one in which she believes she helped her stepfather after he fell. These experiences led her to view time and distance as possibly non-linear and earthly life as an experience of separation. These are Donna’s personal spiritual interpretations, not established facts.

Donna also describes different levels of consciousness using the analogy of ice, water, and steam, and says she imagines people creating their own heavens. She says she does not fear death, though she fears being seriously injured. She has written memoirs about her family and a science-fiction novel exploring life under different conditions.

Wellness and Personal Advice

• Offer grieving people care without minimizing their loss. Donna cautions that telling someone their loved one is “in heaven” may not address the pain of the person who remains.
• Acknowledge people in everyday interactions. She recommends making eye contact, smiling, and wishing people—such as store employees—a good day so they feel seen as individuals.
• Use prayer for comfort when frightened. Donna says she prayed for protection during an unsettling experience and felt calmer afterward.
• Stay curious and keep learning. Donna describes a lifelong love of learning and says she enjoyed researching and imagining ideas while writing.
