Overview

An ancient Persian story from Arabian Nights introduces a cruel sultan who believes his wife is unfaithful. After hearing (and/or catching) news of her alleged betrayal, he orders her to be executed. He then adopts a brutal routine: every evening, he marries a new woman, and by the next morning he has her strangled.

The Vizier’s Plan

To stop this practice, the Grand Vizier agrees to sacrifice his own family by offering his daughter, Shahrazad, as the sultan’s next bride.

At first, he is conflicted and refuses to kill his daughter, but he is pressured into complying with the sultan’s demand, with dire consequences if he disobeys.

Shahrazad and Dunyazad’s Strategy

Shahrazad prepares her younger sister, Dunyazad, to help carry out the plan. She instructs Dunyazad that after the marriage, she should stay nearby so she can ask Shahrazad for stories each night.

When Shahrazad is brought to the palace, the sultan is struck by her beauty and agrees to her request: she may sleep in the same room as her sister. This gives Shahrazad the opportunity to delay her execution by beginning her storytelling routine.

The Key Setup

The story’s pivotal mechanism is established: before dawn, Dunyazad wakes Shahrazad and asks for one of her “charming stories,” explaining that it may be the last time they’ll be together. Shahrazad begins telling stories, setting up the narrative engine that repeatedly postpones the sultan’s violence.
