In Venice, Lorenzo’s friends (Salanio and Salerino) spread a grim rumor: Antonio has lost a ship (and later it turns out all of them).
Shylock’s luck turns disastrous in a more personal way: his daughter Jessica runs away, taking thousands of gold coins.
Shylock lays out the consequence of Antonio’s debt: if Antonio can’t pay 3,000 ducats, Shylock will legally take “a pound of flesh.” He frames it as revenge, not justice—though he also delivers a heated argument that he deserves fair treatment as a human being, criticizing how Christians have mistreated Jews.

Meanwhile, Bassanio is in Belmont. He’s in the final stage of winning Portia by choosing the correct casket (gold, silver, or lead).

The lead casket is correct, and Bassanio is successful—Portia is thrilled, and they marry.

Right when it seems happy, a letter arrives from Antonio: every ship is lost. Antonio is broke, and Shylock’s bond is now due.

Portia immediately steps in financially, offering to cover the 3,000 ducats.
Crucially, Shylock won’t be satisfied by money—he’s determined to enforce the bond and harm Antonio.

Shylock’s “I will have my bond” mood: Antonio begs for mercy, but Shylock remains rigid and threatening, effectively insisting on murder-by-legal-technicality.
Portia’s quick pivot from marriage to strategy: She pretends to go on a prayer retreat with Narissa, but the real plan is disguising themselves as men to go to Venice and confront the legal trap.
