Summary of "The Live Auction Draft Format: A Draft Room Demo (2023 Updated)"
Live Auction Draft — Drafty demo (2023)
Format overview
Live auction draft mimics real-world auctions. Teams nominate undrafted players; the nominating team immediately becomes the opening/high bidder, and a countdown timer runs while teams freely bid against each other (no turn order).
Bids placed with less than 10 seconds remaining reset the clock to 10 seconds (threshold adjustable by the commissioner). When time expires the high bidder wins and the player is added to that roster.
Drafty offers five nomination formats (see the docs) to vary how players are nominated.
Key mechanics & buttons
- Min Bid: increases the current bid by the minimum increment (default $1; increment adjustable by the commissioner).
- Auto Bid: toggles bidding AI that compares the current price to the team’s target bid and automatically places bids to keep them the high bidder.
- Flashbid: places a new bid equal to a manually entered target amount (one-shot jump).
- Match Bid: lets the nominating team overtake the high bidder without incrementing the current bid (off by default; commissioner can enable it).
- All bids are validated against league eligibility rules before being accepted.
Customization and logistics
Drafty is highly customizable — most rules and thresholds (bid increment, timer reset, match-bid availability, etc.) can be changed to match league traditions.
Typical timing: a 12-team redraft with 15 players per team usually takes about 2.5–3 hours (actual times vary).
Strategies & tips
- Practice in mock drafts to learn the interface and timing, especially for Drafty-specific buttons and auto-bid behavior.
- Use Auto Bid to stay competitive without constant manual bidding; use Flashbid for targeted one-shot jumps.
- If Match Bid is enabled, nominators can use it strategically to seize a player without raising the price.
- Monitor reset-window bidding (late snipes) and plan responses — the timer reset encourages frantic final seconds.
- Configure league settings (increments/timer) to suit your preferred speed and level of competitiveness.
