6 Golden Rules Of Layout Design You MUST OBEY

Six Foundational Layout-Design Rules

These principles help make compositions clear, organized, and visually engaging.

1. Negative Space

Leave areas free of text and graphics so the design can breathe. Negative space separates sections, clarifies the composition, and makes information easier to take in. It can also form shapes within a design.

2. Proximity

Group related elements together and keep unrelated elements separate. This creates clear information groups and helps viewers understand how parts of a layout connect.

3. Repetition

Repeat visual choices—such as colors, typefaces, shapes, or illustration styles—to create a consistent theme and unify the design.

4. Contrast

Use differences in color, size, weight, shape, or orientation to add visual interest, establish emphasis, and direct attention. For example, a bold title or contrasting color can make an element stand out.

5. Alignment

Align text, images, and other elements deliberately to keep a layout neat and coherent. A single intentionally misaligned element can also stand out when the rest of the composition is aligned.

6. Focal Points

Create areas of emphasis that attract attention and guide viewers through the design. A focal point might use contrasting color, large scale, imagery, or typography. Directional cues can then lead the eye to other information.

Additional Principle

The presenter also notes hierarchy as an important layout principle, but leaves it out of the main six because it has been covered in other tutorials.
