Summary

Zhou Tong is a small-town sheriff with a soft spot for the bullied and an obsession with the mysterious Mist Sect. When his father, Zhou Shouyi, is framed for helping a thief steal a royal treasure, Zhou Tong tries to save him. His efforts end in tragedy: the demon Bi Fang kills Zhou Shouyi, and Zhou Tong discovers that a powerful object called the Jia has been hidden inside him.

The story mixes supernatural danger with comic small-town antics. Zhou Tong stands up for his timid friend Flea, often teasing him for being such a nervous follower. At a tavern, a landlady introduces her frightening-looking family. Zhou Tong’s companions are startled by her son, but she dryly reassures them that he is cute—and jokes that he already has a favorite father.

Meanwhile, Bi Fang hunts for Tianlao, the dying Mist Sect master who entrusted Zhou Tong with the Jia. After his father’s death, Zhou Tong joins the Mist Sect and trains under four eccentric masters in formations, charms, strength, and control.

Zhou Tong’s warm friendship with Flea provides the film’s emotional center. Flea remembers Zhou Tong comforting him through a dark night and insists that Zhou’s courage and persistence are his own—not qualities he learned from his father or the Sect. Zhou Tong also grows close to a fellow Mist Sect disciple, who reveals that she was bullied because the Sect forbids using magic against ordinary people.

Grief repeatedly drives Zhou Tong toward revenge, despite the Sect’s rules. He sneaks away to confront Jia Ming and Bi Fang, and Flea dies helping him. When Bi Fang takes the Jia from Zhou Tong, he taunts him as powerless. Zhou Tong eventually realizes that his strength comes from his resolve, not merely from the Jia.

In the final confrontation, Zhou Tong returns to fight for the Sect and the innocent people threatened by the demons, even as he admits that he still wants revenge. Drawing on the lessons of his masters and Flea, he defeats Bi Fang and declares himself “Qimen Dun Jia,” even without the Jia.

The film ends on a lighter note, with Zhou Tong helping townspeople and returning Mrs. Sun’s lost dog. Then a message arrives: demons are invading near the Luo River, and the Sect needs him again. Zhou Tong’s reluctant “Do I have to go in person?” sets up another adventure.
