Baldur's Gate 3 - Part 102 - Giving Up The Ghost
Main summary
Key takeaways
Haunted House and Oscar’s Possession
John returns to the haunted house to help Oscar, an old acquaintance possessed by the spirit of his deceased lover, Carrie.
The house’s cursed skulls knock characters back, while nearby golden candelabra deal psychic damage. Bludgeoning damage works well against the skulls, and radiant attacks such as Moonbeam are useful against the ghosts. When awkward indoor angles make targeting difficult, getting close and throwing a bludgeoning weapon can help.
After finding Oscar’s studio and a hidden study, the party discovers a necromancy book and a chilling portrait of Carrie. Destroying the portrait triggers a fight with summoned spirits, but does not end the haunting.
The solution is a special torch found in Mystic Carrion’s house. Burning the portrait with it draws out the final tormented spirit. The party chooses to hear Carrie out rather than deceive or pressure her. She turns on Oscar, leading to another battle. Healing Oscar and using crowd-control spells such as Confusion help manage the fight.
Carrie is finally put to rest. John refuses to defend Oscar’s selfish actions, and Lady Jannath ends their marriage. Oscar leaves behind a magical ring that can revive its wearer after they are downed, though they return with half health and under shadow possession. John eventually steals it, despite repeated, conspicuous pickpocketing attempts.
Society of Brilliance
At the Society of Brilliance lodge, John speaks with Blurg, who is worried about his missing research partner, Omeluum. Omeluum went into the city to investigate cases connected to the Absolute and the unusual tadpole situation, but Blurg has no precise lead on where to find him.
John also searches the lodge for clues about the woman who was given an owlbear egg in place of a githyanki egg, but finds no sign of an owlbear cub.
Astarion’s Reflection
During the long rest, Astarion talks about the freedom he gained by killing Cazador rather than taking the power Cazador offered. He thanks John for helping him avoid repeating Cazador’s cycle of domination.
Astarion is concerned about the 7,000 vampire spawn released into the Underdark. He hopes they can find guidance, while acknowledging that freedom may lead to poor choices.
The House of Grief
Shadowheart recognizes graffiti she wrote years earlier and joins the party to investigate the nearby House of Grief.
Outside, the party meets a man with severe memory loss. His fragmented thoughts suggest that the Sharrans may have taken far more of his memories than he intended to surrender.
At the House, the Sharrans insist that visitors submit to a “mapping of the heart.” Shadowheart takes the lead, revealing that the Mother Superior sent her to retrieve the artifact.
The Mother Superior is revealed to be Viconia DeVir. She orders Shadowheart to descend and answer for her actions, setting up a confrontation in the next episode.
