Summary

Twilight narrates how she once broke the biggest rule of Princess Celestia’s school tour—almost. While guided through the castle’s dank basement tunnels, she spots a strange, rusted door unlike the others. Even after being warned, “Never open that door… understood?”, curiosity eats at her for months. She tries to forget it, but the thought keeps resurfacing until her later life finally offers the perfect opportunity: while planning the Grand Gallivan Gala as a newly made alicorn, she finds herself alone near the same door again.

The door reveals a long staircase descending far beneath the castle into utter darkness. Using her magic, Twilight lights a torch and keeps going. The deeper she travels, the worse it gets—cold air, an overwhelming dead smell, and eventually an enormous cavern filled with plague-dead bodies stacked in columns. Twilight survives by force—hurling herself out of the cavern and back to the basement hallway. She vomits in public and acts incoherently until a servant gets her to a doctor. Celestia visits and chalks it up to nerves and overwork, telling Twilight to rest and that Celestia will handle responsibilities. Twilight agrees, but she can’t bring herself to confess what she truly saw.

The nightmare doesn’t end. Even after months, Twilight says the thing in the darkness is still not finished with her: in her dreams, it warmly leads her back into the same corridor and toward the door, growing more intense until she can barely resist—even though the waking events eventually stop.

Her final message is a warning: there are many choices in life, but if you ever find that door… never, ever open it.
