Summary

The video traces the religious and political career of Pelagio Antonio de la Bastida y Dávalos, a Mexican Catholic leader whose life intersected with the country’s liberal reforms, the Second Mexican Empire, and the Porfiriato.

Early Life and Church Career

Born in Zamora, Michoacán, on March 21, 1816, La Bastida studied at the Morelia seminary and was ordained in 1839. He later taught at and led the institution.

Conflict with the Liberal Government

Appointed bishop of Puebla in 1855 after supporting Antonio de Aro y Tamariz’s rebellion against the liberal government, La Bastida saw the archdiocese’s property confiscated and was exiled to Rome in 1856. He opposed the Constitution of 1857.

Role in the Second Mexican Empire

La Bastida visited Archduke Maximilian in 1862. In 1863, Pope Pius IX appointed him Archbishop of Mexico, and he joined the empire’s provisional regency. After a diplomatic visit to Paris, he returned to Mexico but was removed from the regency in November 1863. He later disagreed with Emperor Maximilian, including over the emperor’s proclamation of freedom of worship.

Exile and Return

During the Restored Republic, La Bastida again went into exile in Rome, where he participated in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870. He returned to Mexico in 1871.

Influence During the Porfiriato and Death

Following the Tuxtepec uprising and Porfirio Díaz’s rise to the presidency in 1876, the Catholic Church regained some public influence. The video also attributes part of this renewed influence to La Bastida’s associates holding public positions.

La Bastida died at his hacienda in Yautepec, Morelos, on February 4, 1891, aged 74. His tomb is in the crypt of the archbishops at Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral.
