49 Religious Lies Jesus Told Me to Stop Believing - #42 Stay Committed to Dead Religious Churches

Discernment About Church Commitment

The speaker challenges the belief that Christians must remain committed to a church even when they feel the Holy Spirit is leading them elsewhere. He distinguishes this from simply “church hopping”: he says he stayed at a church until he believed it was time to leave, then followed what he understood as spiritual guidance—even though leaving meant giving up security, a job, friendships, and ministry.

Key Ideas and Practices

• Prioritize spiritual discernment over blanket rules. General advice such as “stay where you’re planted” may not fit every situation. The speaker encourages seeking guidance for the circumstances at hand.
• Consider whether the church supports your growth. He describes staying if growth is possible there and moving on if the church is heading in a different direction.
• Use journaling and reflection. He recommends journaling about relevant Bible verses and asking God whether you are in the right place and, if not, what steps to take.
• Seek trusted counsel for major decisions. He says he consults three respected spiritual advisers who are willing to pray and share whether their discernment affirms his.
• Review beliefs and teachings repeatedly. Revisiting journal entries and teachings can help identify beliefs he considers limiting and reinforce a sense of freedom.
• Reflect on the impact of beliefs. He encourages noticing how repeated statements or assumptions may influence choices and one’s sense of freedom.

Closing Prayer

The speaker closes with gratitude for guidance and asks listeners to follow what they believe they have discerned, with care and counsel.
