Summary

This beta-era guide covers leveling a mage from 1 to 60 in WoW Forever. Its main point is that AoE grinding is still powerful, but the old approach of gathering huge packs and repeatedly casting Blizzard is no longer reliable. Instead, combine quests with carefully chosen AoE pulls, use abilities creatively, and manage health, mana, and leveling pace.

Leveling Approach and Route

  • Levels 1–13: Quest while building toward your first AoE options.
  • Levels 14–21: Arcane Explosion makes AoE grinding possible before you learn Blizzard. Start with small pulls of around four enemies, using movement, Frost Nova, a wand, and possibly a bomb to finish them.
  • Around level 22: Blizzard unlocks more effective AoE grinding. Keep mixing quests with suitable camps rather than grinding mindlessly.
  • Levels 22–40: Promising camps include locations in the Wetlands, Arathi Highlands, Redridge, Duskwood, and Hillsbrad. Keep pulls controlled; around ten enemies may be more realistic than the enormous packs used in old Classic strategies.
  • After level 40: Don’t assume the old dungeon-farming route will work. Classic-era mage runs used Zul’Farrak, Sunken Temple, and Zul’Gurub for long stretches, but the guide expects WoW Forever to prevent that kind of extreme solo farming. A more quest-heavy route, such as Tommy’s Horde run, may be a better model.

AoE Tactics and Rotation

Place Blizzard at maximum range so enemies cross as much of its area as possible. Use Blink or other movement abilities to create distance. Enemies may cross Blizzard quickly, making two complete casts difficult; an interrupted second cast can waste mana.

After Blizzard, use Cone of Cold to reapply a stronger slow, then use Frost Nova when it’s available. Add a grenade or another crowd-control tool when needed. Against a larger pack, a typical sequence is:

  1. Gather and align enemies.
  2. Use Frost Nova, then Blizzard.
  3. Switch to Cone of Cold and use a second Nova if possible.
  4. Finish with Fire Blast and Arcane Explosion.

If Frost Nova is resisted, the safest response may be to abandon the pull and regroup rather than force it.

The guide’s level-46 Tanaris example demonstrates pulling about nine melee enemies from nearby groups, controlling them with slows and Nova, then finishing with Fire Blast, Cone of Cold, and Arcane Explosion. Be aware that melee reach and spell behavior may differ in WoW Forever: enemies may hit from farther away than players familiar with vanilla expect.

Talents, Race, and Character Setup

Talent paths are flexible. A Horde mage could level with Fire for single-target quests, then switch toward Frost around levels 21–23. Arcane is another possible opening, particularly for Alliance routes with suitable early camps. Staying Frost and taking Improved Frostbolt enables a fast-casting “machine-gun” Frostbolt style that can help shape pulls. Later builds can combine Frost control with improved Fire Blast for stronger burst damage.

Race choices: Gnomes are presented as a strong leveling choice, with their extra mana and the Eureka racial highlighted for an active AoE style. Dwarves are also praised for their mana advantage, while Humans are described as less compelling for this purpose. For Horde, Undead Cannibalize can restore health and mana, and Touch of the Grave adds some damage and healing.

Stats: Prioritize Intellect, then Stamina, MP5, and finally spell power. “Eagle” gear, which provides Intellect and Stamina, is recommended; the guide cautions against overvaluing spell power.

Professions and consumables: Tailoring and Enchanting can make use of cloth and green items from grinding. Engineering provides bombs and target dummies. Keep health and mana potions available; mana-regeneration consumables and wizard oils can also help.

Suggested Grinding Spots and Cautions

Promising camps include Darkshore furbolgs; Westfall Defias and Riverpaw gnolls; Redridge gnolls; Duskwood ghouls and worgen; Wetlands Mosshide gnolls; and Arathi Highlands locations such as Northfold and Go’Shek Farm.

Use caution around Everstill murlocs, as some heal or cast spells. Certain later camps, such as the spiders in the Swamp of Sorrows, can be especially dangerous. A two-mage group may make difficult AoE locations more manageable.
