Recap
A broke 19-year-old, Tang Xoluo, wakes up in the Pokémon world with a Weedle chewing on his shoe—and a “system” that promptly abandons him after delivering a backpack and four gifts. Those gifts let him understand Pokémon, cook astonishingly well, inspect Pokémon and items with a special vision, and earn the affection of Dragon-, Ground-, Rock-, and Steel-types.
His first big discovery is the wreck of poacher Hunter J’s ship. After the crew takes the stolen Pokémon and cargo, Xoluo finds an egg they left behind. It hatches into a shiny Larvitar, which immediately calls him “Mom.” His attempt to catch it lasts about a second: Larvitar would rather be hugged, and its 72-kilogram baby body promptly knocks him into the mud.
Xoluo’s early journey sets the tone: his Pokémon are unusually powerful, frequently hungry, and treated as family rather than tools. He heals an injured Luxray, battles Team Rocket with Larvitar, and meets Ash, Dawn, and Brock. When he sees Paul treating Pokémon as disposable equipment, he challenges him—and Larvitar beats Paul’s Starly and Chimchar, even using Earthquake while sitting on Starly. Paul’s cold reaction to his Pokémon’s injuries only deepens Xoluo’s distrust of him.
Food keeps bringing new teammates into the fold. A Gible steals Xoluo’s sweet-and-sour ribs, negotiates a “win-win” battle deal, and joins after a mutual knockout. A badly injured, blue-gray shiny Hippopotas is rescued after being rejected by its herd. Xoluo helps it face the cruel Hippowdon that drove it out, but Hippopotas ultimately spares its opponent when it sees the rival’s frightened children. It later chooses to travel with Xoluo anyway. An Ursaring joins after a battle and stays for the honey-glazed meals—though Xoluo makes a point of giving every caught Pokémon the option to leave.
Xoluo becomes an accidental caretaker for the whole traveling group, packing lunches, preparing outfits, and repeatedly stopping Ash from charging into danger. He also enters Dawn’s first Pokémon Contest to support her. His Ursaring’s spectacular attack display impresses the crowd, while Larvitar ends a contest battle with an Earthquake that leaves its opponent down in seconds.
The team keeps growing: Hippopotas evolves into a shiny Hippowdon, and after Larvitar takes a brutal hit from Roark’s Rampardos, it evolves into a shiny Pupitar—and defeats Rampardos in a hard-fought Gym battle.
A lucky fossil-mining expedition becomes a major turning point. Xoluo’s vision reveals valuable fossils throughout the mine, earning him a fortune when Roark buys them. More importantly, he finds a Tyranitarite and a Key Stone. The discovery will eventually let him Mega Evolve his Tyranitar, something researchers have struggled to achieve safely.
The story’s recurring comedy is Xoluo’s talent for turning battles into food-related negotiations. Gible judges opponents by whether they’re worth double dinner, Ursaring is motivated by honey, and the whole team seems capable of eating their trainer into bankruptcy. Xoluo even accidentally wins a tournament whose prize is a box of his own flower cakes—then gives the cakes to his opponent, Mohan, who had wanted them for Whitney.
Along the way, Xoluo also feeds the legendary Suicune, briefly meets a foreign Ferroseed that calls him “Godfather,” and recruits a Drillbur that had been stealing medicine because it was injured and wrapped in wire.
Xoluo’s strength draws the attention of the Sinnoh Elite Four. He challenges Lucian and battles his Bronzong to a draw. In the decisive exchange, Pupitar evolves into a black, shiny Tyranitar, and the two trainers’ Pokémon collapse at the same time. The evolution marks a huge emotional moment: Tyranitar insists on continuing because it promised to help Xoluo become Champion.
Xoluo later Mega Evolves Tyranitar in a battle against Cynthia’s Garchomp. Mega Tyranitar is powerful enough to seriously challenge the Champion’s ace, but the transformation drains Xoluo, and he collapses before the fight can be decided. He wakes in the hospital to find Cynthia asleep beside him and his friends sprawled on the floor.
Afterward, Cynthia takes him to the Pokémon League, where he meets the Elite Four, cooks them an impressive meal, and is even recruited—unsuccessfully—as their head chef.
The friendships around him develop as much as the battles do. Xoluo helps Paul’s traumatized Chimchar break through its fear, and Paul eventually gives Chimchar away. Xoluo passes it to Ash, who earns its trust. Dawn also grows as a trainer, eventually evolving Buneary into Lopunny during a doubles tournament. Xoluo’s evolving Gible finally becomes a Garchomp after an intense battle, fulfilling its long-standing ambition to challenge Cynthia’s own.
The biggest spectacle arrives in Alamos Town, where Dialga and Palkia’s fight tears the town away from the rest of the world. Xoluo recognizes the danger, helps Darkrai protect the town, and gets the music needed to restore it. He and his Pokémon try to draw Palkia away, but ordinary attacks barely scratch the Legendary. His unlikely solution is to throw Dragon-type energy cubes into Palkia’s mouth. Palkia likes the food enough to stop fighting; Dialga gets a serving too, and the two gods settle down to eat. Once Ash plays the ancient song, the damage is healed and Palkia restores the town. Darkrai departs after promising to help Xoluo if he ever needs it.
By the end, Xoluo has a remarkable team, a circle of friends, and a reputation that reaches the Champion—but his quieter moments reveal that he still feels the loneliness of having no family in this world. His Pokémon’s affection, especially Tyranitar’s, gives him a place to belong. Even when the gods of time and space are involved, the story’s solution is still, somehow, good food.
