Recap

KallMeKris introduces three true-crime cases in which the apparent explanation turns out to be badly wrong. Her storytelling blends suspense with blunt reactions and dark humor. At one point, she jokes about “dodging a bullet” in a case where the phrase becomes grimly literal.

Carrie Farver: The stalker who was supposedly missing

Auto-shop manager David Cropa began seeing Carrie Farver after casually dating Shana Golar. Soon after Carrie disappeared, David received a stream of increasingly disturbing texts and emails that seemed to come from Carrie. Her family also received strange messages, but no one could find her in person.

Shana presented herself as another target of the supposed harassment, and she and David grew closer as they dealt with it. Years later, investigators reexamined the digital evidence. Shana’s fingerprint was found in Carrie’s SUV, and evidence connected threatening messages and images to Shana’s devices. Detectives concluded that Shana had impersonated Carrie and sent thousands of messages to make it appear that Carrie was alive and unstable. Carrie had actually been murdered around the time she vanished.

Kris is struck by how completely Shana deceived David, who had relied on her as an ally. She also criticizes investigators for not finding Carrie’s blood, hidden beneath the upholstery in the SUV, sooner. Shana was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, though she continued to claim she was innocent.

Holly Bobo: The abduction witnessed from home

Nursing student Holly Bobo was taken from her family’s property in broad daylight. Her brother, Clint, saw a camouflage-clad man walking with her into the woods and initially thought the man was her boyfriend, Drew. By the time Clint realized something was wrong, Holly had disappeared. Her lunchbox and other belongings turned up during searches, but the investigation dragged on for years.

The case eventually led to a group of local men, including Zach Adams and Jason Autry, rather than the boyfriend or brother targeted by rumors. Holly’s remains were found in 2014. Autry later testified about what happened, though the video notes that parts of the accounts were disputed and physical evidence was limited. Adams was convicted of kidnapping, rape, and murder and received life in prison, plus additional consecutive sentences. Other men also received prison sentences.

Kris reacts with anger at the long wait for answers and the suspicion directed at people close to Holly. She also emphasizes how frightening it was that early leads pointed toward men who had initially been overlooked.

The “haunted” house: A person hiding in the walls

In Massachusetts, the Bowen family thought their home was haunted: objects went missing, the television acted strangely, and they heard noises. The explanation was more frightening than a ghost. Teenager Daniel LaPlante had been hiding in crawl spaces and inside the walls, sneaking around the house for weeks. When he finally confronted the family, one of the daughters escaped through a window. Police later found him concealed in the house and arrested him.

LaPlante was released from juvenile custody after his mother helped bail him out. Not long afterward, he broke into the nearby Gustafson family’s home and murdered Priscilla Gustafson and her two young children. After a brief manhunt, he was caught hiding in a dumpster. He was convicted and sentenced to three consecutive life terms.

Kris says she would rather have a haunted house than discover someone living in its walls. She also reacts with disbelief that LaPlante was released before the later murders. She closes by expressing sympathy for the families and urging viewers to stay safe.
