Plot Summary

During Spain’s financial crisis, Ernesto, a bank manager, lets a customer named Budi into the branch before it opens. The visit is a distraction: Budi’s crew takes over the bank and forces Ernesto to reveal the safe code. But the diamond in box 34 is missing, so the robbers leave with cash and jewelry instead.

The getaway goes badly when the crew crashes. As the investigation unfolds, conflicting accounts and imagined versions of the crash make it unclear who died and what happened. A major reveal is that Carla, Thomas, and Raul are police officers who helped carry out the robbery. Ernesto, meanwhile, is revealed as its mastermind. Police get a comic clue when they notice that one of the robbers stepped in dog droppings, while the narrator repeatedly jokes that the increasingly complicated plot is giving him a headache.

The film explores several possible versions of the crash and its aftermath, each showing how a different death might change the group’s fate. In the version that leads to the final events, Thomas dies, while Budi, Carla, and Raul survive. They split the robbery money. Carla reveals that she is pregnant but doesn’t know whether Raul or Thomas is the father; Raul accepts her regardless.

The missing diamond remains unresolved. Budi discovers that the stone they took is fake, and Carla realizes that the owner insured the real diamond shortly before the robbery—a sign that the heist was part of a larger scheme. Carla and Raul follow Ernesto to the airport, where he meets Regina, a café waitress involved in the plan. Ernesto has secretly exchanged the real diamond for a fake and escapes with the valuable stone.

The police catch Budi, while Carla and Raul are arrested at the airport. Ernesto boards his flight with the real diamond, having outplayed the officers who thought they were in control. The narrator’s closing verdict is that Ernesto is “crazy,” followed by the moral to be wary of criminals.
