Summary

After leaving Lucy’s apartment, the narrator is consumed by unclear anger—part frustration, part fear, and part rage at the “CRUS” and the hopeless talk around it. As they walk down the hall toward the elevator, their body begins reacting violently: their wound throbs, their skin burns, and their skull tingles.

Suddenly, voices leak into their mind like an overheard phone call. They realize Jaden Carroll (seen earlier in the elevator) is speaking with Eugene O’Neil on another floor—discussing the “Hway guy” and whether someone will “tell.” The conversation grows ominous, shifting to instructions on squeezing information out of “the brother” and controlling him—revealing power dynamics and plans already in motion around Lucy and others named in the call.

When the elevator arrives, the narrator—now wearing a hood and bearing a nightmarish, shifting, unrecognizable face—startles Jaden so badly he freezes in terror. The narrator tries to shove him back into the elevator, but their touch becomes electrical and wrong: a jolt shoots through their arm, sending Jaden crashing hard into the elevator’s back wall.

Inside the elevator on the way down, Jaden recovers enough to spit and demand answers (“Damn it, what are you?”). The narrator threatens him sharply: if he goes near Lucy or Ben Walker again, he won’t survive the next encounter. When the narrator touches Jaden again, it becomes clear their power is involuntary/unstable, and Jaden panics, dodging while insisting the narrator’s trying to do something worse.

They reach the ground floor, and no one is around—so the narrator flees into the stairwell, trying to stop thinking about what they’ve done while forcing their skin to return to normal.

That night, the narrator lies in bed processing the “cyber world” now living in their mind: the terrifying and overwhelming access it grants. It includes internet browsing, databases, anonymous texting/calling, listening in on other people’s conversations, reading texts and call logs, tapping into cell phones, recording photos/videos, and even reading emails anywhere. What’s scary is how easily it becomes “too much,” like an overdose of information and control—though the narrator is also fascinated by it.

As their power manifests, a faint violet glow flickers across their skin as an internal “radio-controlled clock” reads 23:3243 seconds.
