Plot Summary

An old poor farmer and his widowed, elderly mother live peacefully near a mountain—until a despotic ruler issues a brutal proclamation ordering everyone in the province to immediately execute or abandon all aged people. Terrified townspeople obey, preparing the “kindest” death they can offer.

Heartbroken, the farmer carries his mother on his back up Obatsuyama (“the mountain of abandoning the aged”) so she won’t be left behind. As they climb, the mother notices he keeps choosing the wrong paths. To save him, she quietly snaps twigs and drops handfuls at intervals, creating a trail of markers.

When they reach the summit, the son finally prepares to end things honorably and tenderly, gathering pine needles for her. But the mother—still loving, still concerned for his safety—tells him to follow the twigs back down, because that is the route to the familiar path. Overcome with devotion, the son vows not to leave her, and together they retrace the twig path into the valley at night.

In hiding, the son conceals his mother beneath the kitchen floor in a walled closet, constantly watching for danger. Their relative safety doesn’t last. The governor later announces another humiliating, impossible demand: he wants a “rope of ashes.” Panic spreads across the province, since the order appears designed to punish failure.

The son tells his mother, and she devises a solution. She instructs him to make a rope from twisted straw, stretch it on flat stones, and burn it on a windless night. When the fire dies, the straw’s shape remains. They present it as a rope of ashes, with every twist still intact.

The governor is impressed—not only by the final result, but by the cleverness behind it. When the farmer admits the truth and credits his mother, the ruler reflects on his earlier mistakes. He realizes that wisdom matters more than mere youth and strength, abolishes the cruel law, and the harmful custom fades away into legend.
