Recap

In Chapter 1 of Miguel Street, the narrator introduces Bogart, a quiet, hard-to-read man whose daily routine is to sit in his room playing solitaire. Hat calls to him each morning, “What happening there, Bogart?”—usually getting little more than a vague reply. His nickname is linked to Humphrey Bogart’s popularity after Casablanca, though the story hints that Hat may have given it to him.

Bogart claims to be a tailor, but the narrator can’t recall him making a suit. He has something in common with Popo, the carpenter next door, who is forever working on “the thing without a name.” Despite his silence, Bogart becomes popular with the men of the street, who find his calm, bored presence reassuring.

Then, one morning, Bogart vanishes without explanation. The men mourn his absence, briefly inspect his cards, and speculate about where he might have gone. In time, they turn his room into a clubhouse. Months later, Bogart suddenly returns, finding Edos and a woman in his bed. He simply tells them to move over, then sleeps until evening.

At a rum-filled reunion, the gang presses him for an explanation. Bogart tells a tall, cinematic tale: he says he worked on a ship, deserted in British Guiana, became a cowboy, smuggled goods into Brazil, and ran a high-class brothel in Georgetown before being arrested. When Ed asks an awkward question, Bogart takes offense and refuses to say more. Afterward, the men play along with his movie-star act: Bogart adopts a tougher persona, while Hat becomes “Harrison,” even imitating Rex Harrison. The running joke is that the street’s ordinary characters start treating themselves like actors in Bogart’s private film.

Bogart disappears and returns more than once, each time seeming bolder and more American in his manner. He gives children money for treats and throws a party for them—until Sergeant Charles arrives and arrests him. The real reason, the street learns, is bigamy: Bogart had left a wife in Tunapuna, then had a child with another woman in Port of Spain and married her too. The chapter closes with the neighbors debating why he left his first wife.
