Plot Summary

Matt Hagen is a rising actor whose life collapses after crime boss Marco Zabo scars his face. Matt also loses his legal battle against Zabo, his film role, and the support of those around him. Desperate to look like himself again, he turns to scientist Kathleen Kohl, who treats him with experimental regenerative nanocells.

At first, the treatment seems miraculous: Matt’s face is restored, and he discovers that his body can heal itself. But the cells respond to his emotions, causing him to change shape whenever he loses control. His powers grow from repairing injuries to copying other people—and his anger soon turns lethal. Matt kills his former manager Frank and childhood friend Corey, taking on their appearances as he becomes increasingly unsure of his own identity.

The horror escalates when Matt infiltrates Zabo’s nightclub, shifting between faces to confuse the gang. He kills several of Zabo’s men and ultimately gets revenge on the crime boss by inflicting the same kind of facial mutilation Zabo once inflicted on him. Meanwhile, Kathleen realizes Matt’s transformation has gone far beyond what her treatment was meant to do.

When Kathleen rejects Matt, he disguises himself as her fiancé, detective John Borelli, and tries once more to win her over. Kathleen shocks him with a taser, triggering the treatment’s emergency shutdown. Matt’s body swells into a huge, muddy mass before seemingly breaking apart. His body is never found, however, and Kathleen later suspects he may still be alive.

In the final twist, a homeless man reveals himself to be Matt. He appears to reunite with Kathleen, but the “Kathleen” he embraces is actually a replica created from his own body. Matt has become Clayface: able to take on faces and forms, but unable to recover the identity and life he wanted. The story’s most disturbing turn is also its final one—his shapeshifting can now create the very person he longs to be with.
