Summary

Sarman, a brave young farmer from the isolated village of Amri, has long dreamed of a one-horned animal and a magnificent city he has never seen. When his uncle Durjan finally lets him travel to Mohenjo Daro, Sarman discovers that the city from his dreams is real—and that a mysterious symbol his uncle gave him is revered there.

In the marketplace, Sarman quickly stands out. He refuses to undersell his valuable goods, challenges the unfair trading practices imposed by the king’s son, Moonja, and speaks up against a sudden tax increase. He also wins people’s affection by helping the troubled old man Jahiro. Meanwhile, Sarman meets Chaani, the priest’s daughter, and the two fall for each other. In one memorable comic moment, Chaani frightens off some troublemakers by pretending she can curse them into frogs.

Mohenjo Daro is ruled by Maham, a ruthless king whose grand development plans conceal greed and revenge. Sarman’s resistance brings him into conflict with Maham and Moonja, while the truth about his own past begins to emerge. The priest reveals that Sarman is the son of Serujan, the city’s former ruler, who was framed and killed after opposing Maham’s dam project. Sarman’s uncle had hidden the truth to protect him.

Maham forces Sarman to face a deadly traditional test against two formidable giants, Bakar and Jokar. Though badly outnumbered, Sarman relies on strategy rather than brute strength and wins without killing his remaining opponent. The victory frees Chaani from her arranged marriage, but Moonja’s rage turns violent: he kills the priest and pursues Chaani. Sarman intervenes, and Moonja dies in the fight.

Rather than simply claim the throne, Sarman calls on the people to stand together and exposes Maham’s scheme: the gold from the dam project is being used to buy weapons for revenge against Harappa. Abandoned by his supporters, Maham watches as Sarman and the townspeople move to destroy the dam. They evacuate the city, but the weakened structure gives way, and a devastating flood destroys Mohenjo Daro.

The survivors escape to a new home, while Jahiro chooses to remain in the city where he was born. In the final image, Sarman sees the unicorn from his dreams by the river.

The story closes with the people’s victory over tyranny and the reminder that a community’s future belongs to its people—not just its ruler. The narrator also notes that the film is a fictional story inspired by ancient civilization, not a historical documentary.
