Session 1 Recap

Eustace begins the day burying his mother—on his own birthday, no less. His awkward, heartfelt goodbye becomes especially bittersweet as he reflects on the years he spent caring for her. He then heads to work at the clinic, where a patient arrives with a bullet lodged in his arm. Eustace calmly removes it and stitches him up, but the unusual injury hints that something may be brewing on the island.

Meanwhile, the crew’s paths start to cross. J arrives by ship and gets into a bizarre food-selling exchange with Eustace, who cooks fish with a suspicious green “flavoring” from his hair. Light meets Yuka, who is obsessed with defeating a squirrel named Sammy and becoming “king of the squirrels.” Light helps Yuka collect acorns with a ladder—an act Yuka immediately recognizes as cheating but appreciates anyway.

The squirrel business gets even stranger when Light and Yuka find Sammy, a tiny, cigar-smoking squirrel in a suit. Sammy turns out to have a connection to Light’s family: Light’s mother once helped deliver his child, Sammy Jr. At the same time, Eustace tries to get time off to grieve. His boss is also a squirrel in a suit, and after J makes a dramatic legal threat with a giant beige gun, Eustace finally gets leave.

That doesn’t settle things. Sammy Jr. confronts Eustace over forcing his father to give him time off, and a dispute over workplace rights spirals into a fight. Eustace slashes through a swarm of squirrels, Light is horrified by the violence, and the house is left riddled with holes. Amid the chaos, Light befriends Sammy Jr. and decides she wants to become a pirate.

The group then tries to decide who should captain their new crew. Eustace argues that it should be him because it’s his birthday and his mother just died; J bases his claim on owning the ship; and Yuka has opinions of their own. The debate descends into ridiculous bravado and crude jokes without producing a firm decision.

Just as the crew prepares to leave on J’s ship, Eustace discovers someone buried in his mother’s grave: Dash, who had apparently been dragged into it by one of Eustace’s tentacles. Dash climbs out covered in dirt, and the newly assembled party heads for the boat. Their departure is immediately complicated by angry wildlife—including pelicans pelting the ship and its passengers with droppings—leaving the crew’s first voyage off to a very messy start.
