Summary

Bambang returns to his Central Java village after years away in Sumatra, bringing Rini, the woman he plans to marry. At first, Rini seems polite and kind. But after moving in with Bambang’s parents, she refuses to help around the house, creating tension with her mother-in-law, Deanti. To ease the conflict, Bambang builds a small home for Rini and their son, Ario.

While Bambang is away, villagers begin whispering that Rini is seeing Roni, a married traveling vegetable seller. Joko and some other young men keep watch, and one night they catch Roni entering Rini’s house. The pair are confronted and made to promise to end the affair, but they continue meeting in secret.

Their relationship comes to light again after they have a motorcycle accident. Roni dies, and Rini later dies in the hospital before Bambang can reach the village. Afterward, Deanti tells Bambang the truth about the affair.

Strange events soon unsettle the village. During preparations for Roni’s funeral, a woman sees three small, bald, frightening figures in his kitchen. Some villagers believe they are tuyul, and residents recall rumors that Roni kept them. Later, people report seeing a figure resembling Rini near her house.

On the 25th night after Rini’s death, Bambang and Ario see a pocong-like apparition with Rini’s face. It cries and apologizes. Bambang tells her he forgives her and promises to care for Ario.

The sightings continue, including one Joko claims to photograph outside Rini’s empty house. A shaman says Rini’s spirit is still unsettled because Musrifah, Roni’s wife, had sworn she would never forgive Rini. Bambang visits Musrifah with the village head and others to apologize on his wife’s behalf. After Musrifah finally says she forgives Rini, villagers report that the apparition never appears again.

The story closes with a reminder that choices can harm not only the people involved, but also their families and neighbors.
