Summary
A penniless boy named Aayagi is dropped into Sinnoh with no Pokémon or Poké Balls—only a mysterious panel that rewards him for fully exploring ancient places. After a week of being chased through the Solaceon Ruins by 32 Unown, he tricks them into blasting open a blocked passage, completes the ruins, and triggers his first summon.
The creature that appears is Agumon, a talking dinosaur from another world whom the panel inexplicably classifies as a Dragon-type Pokémon. Hungry and lonely, Agumon earns Aayagi’s trust after Aayagi shares his meager fruit. When the Unown corner them, Agumon defeats the swarm with rapid-fire Pepper Breath.
The victory ends with an unexpected apology: the Unown were young guards protecting their home, and Aayagi realizes that he has been the real pest. He leaves them food and keeps a valuable key hidden in the ruins rather than risk waking the ancient guardians.
New Friends and the Lost Tower
On the road, Agumon’s well-meaning attempts to help are often disastrous. He “catches” fish by boiling a river, then worries that a stolen dinner means his new friend will abandon him. Aayagi reassures him and soon meets Candice, a young trainer searching for her Snover after neglecting it for a fancy dress.
Aayagi provokes Candice until Snover steps in to protect her, then stages a battle that helps the two reconcile. Candice lends Aayagi his first Poké Ball and helps him turn a pile of berries into supplies.
Aayagi’s next major target is Solaceon’s Lost Tower. He and Agumon fight their way through ambushes by Ghost-types. Agumon’s fearlessness makes the floor-one ghosts’ attempts to scare him hilariously ineffective, while Aayagi uses his panel to spot enemies in the dark.
On the fourth floor, they encounter Cynthia’s Spiritomb, an ancient Pokémon in a murderous frenzy. Aayagi’s panel reaches 100% exploration and summons a Digivice—the missing condition Agumon needs to evolve. Cynthia helps calm Spiritomb by having Ghost-types drain the malice trapped in its keystone.
Agumon and Spiritomb later battle, and Agumon evolves into Greymon, revealing a huge jump in power. Cynthia offers to help register him as a rare revived species, since the Pokédex can only identify him as “a mysterious Pokémon.”
Training and Trouble in Veilstone
The story’s lighter moments continue: a newspaper falsely declares Aayagi and Candice a secret betrothed couple, forcing Candice to sneak past reporters. Meanwhile, Aayagi trains Greymon to compress his fire into a devastating new attack. Their growing reputation leaves the forest’s wild Pokémon too frightened to fight them.
Candice returns with three Pokémon for a rematch. Greymon wins, and Candice vows to keep challenging him.
In Veilstone, Aayagi meets future Gym Leader Maylene and her father, a former Elite Four challenger who now spends his days gaming. Maylene’s father diagnoses Greymon’s problem: his strange energy makes it difficult for him to learn most moves. He agrees to try to fix it, but only if Aayagi wins a Gym battle.
The match quickly turns ugly when Maylene’s father breaks his promise to use a beginner team and sends out his level-48 Lucario. Greymon chooses to continue, hoping the man can still help him.
SkullGreymon and Team Galactic
The battle becomes a catastrophe. With Aayagi knocked down and Greymon believing his trainer is in danger, Greymon undergoes a forced, uncontrolled evolution into SkullGreymon. The terrifying form has enormous power but no control, and it destroys the Gym and much of the surrounding hill.
Aayagi discovers that SkullGreymon can be worn out and returned to his normal form, but the incident draws the attention of the police and Team Galactic. Their commander, Jupiter, pursues Aayagi, while their leader, Cyrus, realizes the boy may be connected to Sinnoh’s ancient legends.
Aayagi’s hidden stone summon becomes crucial during the chase. The meteorite-coated egg finally cracks under SkullGreymon’s destructive blast, revealing a Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Proud, powerful, and stubbornly protective of Aayagi, the newborn dragon helps repel Jupiter’s Pokémon and gives the group a chance to escape. Aayagi has to stop it from turning back to fight an entire fleet of helicopters.
The Lake and the Journey Ahead
The group takes refuge at a hidden lake, where the lake Pokémon help restore Greymon. He returns in a new form, GeoGreymon, with the ability to use the moves he had struggled to learn.
When Team Galactic arrives, Aayagi and the lake’s Pokémon fight back. The Blue-Eyes Dragon loses its first serious battle but learns new techniques, while Greymon defeats the commanders’ strongest Pokémon. Aayagi then bargains directly with Cyrus: Team Galactic must leave the lake alone, make his identity papers legitimate, and keep their agents away from him.
The story ends with Aayagi setting out again with Greymon, Candice’s rescued-and-reconciled Snover now in her care, a newborn Swablu that likes to perch on Greymon’s horns, and the proud Blue-Eyes Dragon. The ancient key remains hidden in the Solaceon Ruins—and Cyrus may eventually come looking for it.
