Summary
This Halloween special brings together three tales built around old October customs—and the terrifying consequences of ignoring them.
The Canal and the Rooster-Legged Stranger
Camilo recalls growing up on a ranch where his grandfather closed the irrigation canal every October, fearing that evil presences could travel down from the mountains with the water. After a profitable harvest persuades the family to leave it open, unsettling signs begin: restless animals, dogs howling, and a strange song drifting across the fields.
One evening, Camilo encounters a towering figure with rooster-like legs, glowing eyes, and the smell of sulfur. It follows him, sings beside him, and somehow knows about the family’s home and the rosary hanging inside. Camilo escapes by praying and running to his grandparents. The family closes the canal again, even though it costs them much of their crop.
The Bridge and Its Eight Stones
Jaret describes a community tradition of placing eight river stones across a bridge on certain nights in late October. Travelers must move them to cross, then put them back to keep spirits from following them home.
He first recounts the disturbing legend of a drunken man who drove over the stones and later vanished, only to be found alive but badly shaken downstream. Years later, Jaret makes the same mistake: tired after a late drive, he leaves the stones displaced. A cowboy piñata mysteriously disappears and seems to move on its own; then a pale, expressionless man in a hat appears beside his truck.
The stranger knows the celebration is for Jaret’s nephew, and a crowd of shadowy figures blocks the road. Jaret’s rosary and prayers help him get the truck started and reach the community. The missing piñata and the stranger are never found.
The Baby and the Seven Kernels of Corn
Neida remembers her grandmother’s protection custom for babies during the last days of October: keep a small green pouch containing seven corn kernels inside the baby’s pillow.
After she leaves the pillow downstairs overnight, Neida hears footsteps upstairs and finds her infant missing from the crib. Under the bed, she discovers the baby lying beside a strange woman with reddish eyes, long hair, and an enormous hand resting on the child. Neida prays, pulls the baby free, and flees to a neighbor.
Her mother later points out that the protective pouch had been left behind. Neida never sees the woman again, but cannot forget her hand over the baby in the darkness.
Between the Stories
Between stories, the host briefly teases that “tonight you’ll sleep with someone,” a playful bit of ominous Halloween humor before the next tale begins.
The special closes with thanks to the audience and an invitation to share which story frightened them most.
