Summary of "Hyrule Myths - How Many of Breath of the Wild's Shrines Can You Beat Without Pausing?"
Overview
- Channel/video: Hyrule Myths — a bonus addendum to a Breath of the Wild “no-pause” challenge.
- Goal: complete as many shrines as possible while banning pause/menu functions (no pausing to hold materials or swap runes). Final total: 117 shrines completed.
Core constraint
The run was treated as if Magnesis was the only rune available (Magnesis was kept from the Great Plateau). Pausing and menu-based tricks were disallowed. Later in the run the player briefly switched to remote bombs for a few specific tricks.
Outcome
- Reached 117 out of 120 shrines.
- Three shrines remained blocked because their triggers or quests explicitly require pausing/opening menus:
- A shrine gated behind the Sheikah ball minigame (interaction with the ball requires the minigame reward obtained via pause).
- A Kakariko shrine that requires releasing five fireflies at night (you must hold fireflies in your hands via the menu).
- A Warbler’s Nest shrine that needs the Rito kids to sing / specific NPC quest triggers that rely on inventory/menu interactions.
- An unexpected shield inventory quirk late in the run caused Magnesis to be lost when a Forest Dweller shield auto-equipped.
Gameplay highlights, strategies and notable shrine solutions
General tactics
- Treat Magnesis as the only usable rune — push, cling to, and move metal objects to substitute for Stasis/Cryonis.
- Rely on physics exploits and environmental interaction instead of paused inventory tricks.
- Heavy use of:
- shield-parrying, shield-jumping, shield-surfing
- precise platforming
- bomb-arrow boosts
- gyroscope aiming
- Community/stream chat suggestions were used heavily; many solutions were crowd-sourced during the livestreams.
Key mechanics / tricks used repeatedly
- Magnesis clinch/glitch: when Link and a metal object both act on a movable object, Link’s movement can effectively push any object regardless of mass — used to move very large or seemingly immovable items.
- Guardian laser parry: force Guardians to fire and parry the laser back to damage them (doesn’t lower shield durability).
- Shield jumps and precise shield-parry/platforming to reach ledges normally requiring runes.
- Bomb-arrow launches: use bombs or bomb arrows to launch Link or objects higher than normal jumps for precise extra height.
- Boomerang physics: boomerangs (notably the giant boomerang) can push objects in ways other metal weapons can’t — used to move large buttons/objects.
- Using non-obvious items as substitutes: sledgehammer/drill shaft to break bombable walls, torches and flammable swords to carry blue flame, stacking boxes via Magnesis to make climbable stacks.
- “Ravioli scoop” (updraft tornado): lift and re-place objects if they fall.
Notable shrine-specific workarounds (selected)
- Trial of Power / combat rooms: avoid direct fights by forcing enemies to attack and parrying/reflection.
- Unstable bridge: run + mash jump to cross without Stasis.
- Boulder/bridge puzzles: push or position metal objects with Magnesis or use the Magnesis clinch on doors.
- Bombable walls when bombs aren’t viable: break them with big tools (sledgehammer/drill shaft).
- Snowball-activated cutscenes: use Magnesis to nudge or grow a snowball into triggering the scripted opening.
- Stasis-based puzzles: bring alternate boulders/objects from elsewhere, stack them, or move them into place with Magnesis.
- Blue flame shrine: if the torch is lost, pick up a flammable sword (e.g., Forest Dweller Sword) from a chest and use it to transport flame.
- Laser-blocking shrine: drag a metal chest into the laser’s path to block it.
- Luminous stone / pedestal puzzles: move environmental luminous stones or light campfires by manipulating objects or using explosives rather than opening inventory.
- Cannon shrine: use the cannon for movement exploits (walk on cannon + precision shield jump) to reach the monk.
- Giant boomerang + repeated attempts: used for a difficult lift/push of a ball in a golf-style shrine.
- Dragon scale springs (Wisdom/Courage/Power): instead of picking up scales (which lock via menus), physically move the scales across the world by creative means (fishing them out, pushing into minecarts, using skeletons/minecart magnetism, ravioli scoop) so they can be dropped into the springs — demonstrated that all three Springs are completable without pausing.
- Shatter the Heavens shrine: use well-aimed bomb arrows and triple-shot diagonal angles to launch a block upward in place of Stasis.
- Cryo-dependent / water-guides shrine: after swapping to remote bombs, use bomb-launch techniques (including timing shield-jumps during the short pre-explosion window) to clear very hard jumps.
- Final shrine completion in the run: achieved via a bomb-launch trick.
Failures / blocked shrines and reasons
- Several shrines remained unreachable because their quests or triggers require holding items in the inventory or menu interactions:
- Sheikah ball minigame shrine (requires pausing for the minigame reward).
- Kakariko firefly shrine (requires holding fireflies via menu).
- Warbler’s Nest shrine (requires NPC quest triggers that rely on inventory/menu interactions).
- Inventory quirk: a Forest Dweller shield auto-equipped and caused the Magnesis rune to be lost late in the run.
Tips and takeaways
- When runes are restricted, think in terms of: move metal/objects, use environment momentum, reflect attacks, and reuse respawning high-value weapons (e.g., Royal Claymore) found at towers for strength fights.
- Keep an eye on auto-equips and inventory behavior when preparing shrine-related quests (some shrine quests auto-equip items from inventory).
- Streaming and community input can surface non-obvious physics exploits — many solutions were found via crowd-sourced suggestions during the livestreams.
