Recap

A miller’s son is dismissed by his father for being a “good-for-nothing,” so he happily sets off into the wide world with his violin. While other people toil, he takes in the sunshine, sings to the birds, and trusts that luck will provide. A passing carriage brings him to a grand castle, where he is made a gardener—and promptly falls for a beautiful young woman he sees there.

His romance mostly takes place in his imagination. He sneaks peeks at the lady from behind bushes, tries to impress her with flowers and songs, and repeatedly misreads what is going on around him. One especially awkward sneeze gives away his hiding place. Later, he witnesses a masked celebration and becomes convinced that his beloved is already spoken for. Heartbroken, he leaves the castle, abandoning his official duties with little ceremony.

The wanderer heads toward Italy, where the road offers more strange turns than plans. He meets painters Leonard and Guido, who take him along on their travels. Their artistic circles, elaborate conversations, and tangled romantic misunderstandings bewilder him; he often understands very little, but enjoys the food and scenery. In one farcical episode, he is mistaken for a wealthy groom, while he himself misunderstands the clues and assumes he is caught up in a grand romance.

After further adventures with wandering musicians, students, and a clergyman, he eventually makes his way back toward home. At the castle, he finally encounters the woman he has loved from afar. The people around them reveal how much of the confusion came from mistaken identities and crossed wires. The story ends in joyful recognition and the promise of marriage—rather more orderly than the Taugenichts’s journey there.

Much of the comedy comes from his innocent confidence: he drifts into jobs without taking them seriously, mistakes hints for declarations of love, and blunders through situations that others treat as momentous. The romantic songs, landscapes, and chance encounters give his carefree wandering its dreamy, playful tone.
