Overview

Plot

A wall separates the English village of Wall from Stormhold, a kingdom hidden from the human world. Eighteen years before the main story, Dunstan crosses the wall and meets Una, a captive woman. Their brief encounter leads to the birth of Tristan.

Now grown, Tristan hopes to win the affection of Victoria, who treats him more like a servant than a suitor. When a star falls from the sky, he promises to bring it to her as a gift.

The fallen star turns out to be Yvaine, a young woman wearing Stormhold’s magical necklace. Tristan chains her up and sets off to deliver her, but his journey quickly becomes more complicated. A trio of witches, led by the ruthless Lamia, want Yvaine’s heart to restore their youth, while Stormhold’s princes are killing one another to claim the throne. The dead princes linger as ghostly spectators to the succession struggle, adding a morbidly comic edge to the family politics.

Tristan and Yvaine gradually grow close as they encounter danger after danger. One highlight is their time aboard Captain Shakespeare’s flying ship. The captain acts like a fearsome pirate to protect his reputation, but privately reveals a softer, more theatrical side. He gives Tristan a makeover and trains him, while Yvaine joins the crew’s adventures. The video also draws laughs from the contrast between the captain’s intimidating image and his real personality.

When Tristan finally reaches Victoria, he realizes he no longer wants to marry her: he has fallen in love with Yvaine. But the witches and Septimus close in, and Yvaine is captured. Tristan joins forces with Septimus to rescue her, while a family revelation brings Tristan together with his mother, Una.

In the final confrontation, Lamia’s curses and magic nearly defeat them. But Yvaine’s love for Tristan makes her shine with enough power to destroy the witch.

With the danger over, Tristan is revealed as Stormhold’s rightful heir and becomes king. He and Yvaine rule together for many years. The story ends with them lighting the Babylon candle and setting off on a final adventure.
