Episode Summary

The First Encounter

One unusually cold night, a strange old man approaches. He is thin, pale, and bald, with one leg seemingly longer than the other. He stares blankly at Halimah.

Hamid serves him a steaming glass of bandrek. The man drinks it without reacting to the heat, then leaves without paying. Before anyone can figure out who he was, he has vanished.

Sarah’s Encounter

Halimah is pregnant at the time. She later travels to Medan to give birth to Ali, and the family stays with her sister Sarah and Sarah’s husband, Husein.

When the family eventually returns to Aceh, Halimah leaves Ali in Sarah’s care for a day. Sarah falls asleep while putting him down for a nap and dreams of the same unsettling old man, who says, “That child is mine.”

She wakes to find Ali missing from the bed, though the bedroom door is shut. Then she hears a knock: Ali is making his way toward the front door. When Sarah opens it, the old man is there, apparently reaching for the child. She grabs a broom and drives him off. He runs away, still limping.

Sarah calls the family in a panic, and Halimah recognizes the figure as the man from her stall. The family holds a prayer gathering, after which the figure does not appear again for years.

Sumi’s Encounter

In 2018, Halimah’s friend Sumi, who says she can see supernatural beings, has a frightening encounter of her own. While alone at home, she feels a cold hand stroking her hair and sees the same old man in the corner of her room. He repeatedly says, “I need blood and a baby.”

Sumi faints, but later wakes unharmed. She eventually tells Halimah what happened. The matching descriptions convince the women that the encounters are connected, though they never learn what the figure was or why it seemed interested in Ali and blood.

Closing

The episode ends with the mystery unresolved. Halimah reports that Ali has since grown up, and the family hopes the figure never harms anyone.
