Summary

Elara secretly raises Ember, the dragon she gave birth to after telling the village that her baby had died. At first, she’s shocked and frightened by him, but soon she’s tenderly caring for him—and discovering that the little one has a very large appetite. Ember devours the meat she brings home, grows at astonishing speed, and outgrows his bath almost as quickly as Elara can keep him fed.

The villagers begin to suspect something is wrong. Marta notices Elara buying more and more meat, then catches a glimpse of Ember inside her home. When a sheep is killed, suspicion turns into a mob: the villagers call Elara a witch and Ember a monster. Elara pleads with Ember not to hurt anyone, even as the crowd attacks and tries to capture him. She finally urges him to fly away, sending her beloved “little baby” off to save him.

The villagers then cast Elara out, blaming her for bringing a monster among them. She survives in the mountains and continues calling for Ember. The ending suggests they find each other again—or at least that Elara hasn’t given up hope of seeing him.

The standout contrast is between the village’s fear of Ember and Elara’s unwavering belief that he’s her son, not a monster. There are also a few amusing moments amid the drama, especially Ember’s endless appetite and rapid growth.
