Recap

When Xie Fuguang dresses up to welcome her husband, Shen Zhizhang, home from studying abroad, she expects a reunion. Instead, he arrives with Ling Yunzhi, the commander’s daughter he calls his “true soulmate,” and announces that he wants to marry her. His family joins in, mocking Fuguang as old-fashioned and helpless—until she calmly proves she can shoot with startling precision.

The Young Marshal, Mu Ye, arrives in time to witness the commotion. Fuguang tells Shen she’ll grant him the divorce he wants, but she won’t leave empty-handed. With Mu Ye’s backing, she takes the Shen family to court and produces accounts showing that her dowry and labor supported their household. She wins both her divorce and a claim to a million silver dollars.

In court, Fuguang turns the case into a fiery argument for women’s freedom, warning that democracy shouldn’t become an excuse to abandon and exploit women. The crowd rallies behind her, and the judge rules in her favor.

Fuguang’s new life quickly outshines her old one. At a Western-style banquet, she appears in a dazzling gown and crown. Yunzhi and Shen think they’ve impressed a foreign arms dealer, only to discover that Fuguang designed the cufflinks they bought and is the dealer’s business partner. She negotiates a better weapons deal and becomes the region’s first female military instructor.

When Shen’s sister boasts that she can play piano better than Fuguang and promises to “eat shit standing on her head” if she’s wrong, Fuguang plays beautifully—and cheerfully asks whether the promised serving should be fresh or day-old.

Mu Ye’s teasing turns into real affection. He supports Fuguang’s rise as she proves herself at the training camp and on the battlefield. Yunzhi repeatedly challenges her, then refuses to accept defeat—first in a shooting contest, then in martial arts. Fuguang wins both contests, and Yunzhi and Shen are kicked out of the instructors’ barracks. Later, Shen begs Fuguang to take him back. Seeing through his sudden remorse, she jokes that he should try performing fake tears for a living.

As chief of staff, Fuguang helps Mu Ye’s forces take the bandit stronghold of Jiulongzhai. During the campaign, she uncovers Yunzhi’s brutal disregard for civilians: Yunzhi threatens villagers to force the bandit leader to surrender and dismisses the elderly, sick, and disabled as useless. Fuguang brings the crime to light. Despite her father’s influence, Yunzhi is punished and barred from military service.

The fallout grows darker. Yunzhi ends up back with Shen and claims she’s pregnant with his child, but the Shen family rejects her and insists the baby cannot be his. After public humiliation and mounting grievances, she storms the Shen home and kills the family, dying alongside Shen. Fuguang and Mu Ye reflect that the pair squandered their chance to serve their country and its people.

The story ends happily for Fuguang. After more jealous banter and increasingly direct marriage proposals from Mu Ye, she agrees to marry him. They exchange vows and kiss.
