The Battle Between Hanuman and Shiva

After Veerabhadra withdraws, Hanuman senses that Mahadev himself is approaching. Shiva appears on the battlefield, leaving Hanuman torn between devotion to his divine lord and his duty to protect the unconscious Shatrughan and the Ayodhya army. Shiva explains that fate has driven the conflict and grants Hanuman his blessing to fight.

The battle escalates from divine weapons to hand-to-hand combat. Shiva’s Pinaka unleashes the Sarpastra, which Hanuman counters with the Garudastra. A more powerful Nagapishach weapon breaks through and knocks Hanuman back. He rises with a roar of “Jai Shri Ram!” and continues the fight.

When both set aside their weapons, Hanuman lands a powerful punch that makes Shiva step back, though Hanuman is also overwhelmed by the force of the clash. Impressed by Hanuman’s devotion, Shiva offers him a boon—but not one that would end the war. Hanuman asks that Shatrughan and the fallen army be restored, and Shiva grants his request.

Hanuman then lays down his weapons, saying he will not attack his revered lord again. Shiva continues striking him, however. Seeing Hanuman endure the blows, the newly revived Shatrughan impulsively fires the Brahmastra at Mahadev.

Shiva swallows the weapon and manifests his terrifying Nataraja form, making it seem that the universe is moments from destruction. Before the Tandava begins, Rama arrives and respectfully greets him. Hearing Rama’s voice calms Shiva, and the two gods bow to one another. King Veeramani recognizes his mistake and offers his kingdom to Rama.

Rama explains the story’s message: Shiva and Rama are not separate, and devotion to one cannot be divided from devotion to the other. The battle ends not with a victor, but with a demonstration of Hanuman’s devotion and the unity of Hari and Har.
